“The program was amazing! I learned invaluable skills and developed much more confidence in my surgical skills. I felt both supported and challenged the entire time I was there!”
Program FAQs
Applications for training dates January-June 2025 are now open!
- Only veterinarians currently working in shelter medicine or HQHVSN are eligible to apply.
- Training spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Due to the high demand for the program, we unfortunately cannot guarantee a spot for everyone who is eligible for training.
- Fee for training is $400
We have a limited number of training spots available for qualified candidates. Due to the high demand for the program, we may not be able to guarantee a spot for everyone who qualifies. To qualify, we ask that you:
- Be fully licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S., Puerto Rico or other U.S. territories;
- Be currently working in the high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter field or in shelter medicine. This means that you are employed by a nonprofit or municipal shelter/clinic providing spay and neuter services;
- Have not attended this training previously as a licensed veterinarian. Former student externs or participants of other ASPCA training programs are welcome to apply!
We only provide onsite accommodation for participants of the Veterinary Student Externship. We have secured great preferred rates with some Asheville hotels, but take a look around, as you may be able to find a better deal. There are also two great hostels in Asheville. It should be noted that traveling around Asheville is much easier with a car. View Recommendations.
