The ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Science Center (AVFSC) in Gainesville, Florida, is the nation’s first and only multidisciplinary forensic laboratory in the US dedicated to animal cruelty casework involving companion and other domestic animals. We are pleased to offer 2-4 week externship opportunities at our state-of-the-art facility for veterinary students in their clinical year.

No.
No, cases can be planned months in advance or even within 24 hours, however we have no control over whether cases move forward or not. If we aren’t traveling for casework, we do our best (schedule dependent) to provide you with a mock necropsy and mock live cruelty case. If a case does arise, you are encouraged to deploy with our team.
Yes, all associated costs (flight, hotel, and food) is covered by the ASPCA if you travel with our team for casework.
There are a variety of hotels and other lodging options at different price ranges in the area.
Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an hour lunch break.
We can accommodate externs for 2-4 weeks. If another time frame is needed, we may be able to accommodate it.
The ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Science Center (AVFSC) offers:
- A wet laboratory (for necropsies/tissue remains)
- A dry laboratory (for dry items such as osteology, fingerprint analysis, maceration, trace evidence collection)
- Digital radiographs
- A necropsy table
- Freezers
- Secure evidence storage
- Equipment storage
- Crime Scene Unit (vehicle)
- Conference room
