Shelter Director
Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Understand federal, state, county, and local laws regarding shelter administration
- Work with Team Leaders, staff, and the BOD to develop policies and procedures, set goals and objectives, and create risk management plans
- Ensure that facilities and equipment are clean, well maintained, and in safe working order. Ensure that existing equipment is replaced as needed and that new equipment is included in the budgeting process
- Monitor financial statements, engage in budget and financial analysis, analyze data, and make recommendations as necessary to remain within budget and increase efficiencies
- Work with staff, Team Leaders and the BOD to develop policies and practices that ensure appropriate humane treatment and medical care for shelter animals
- Work with the staff, the BOD, and Team Leaders develop and/or improve the approval system for veterinary, training, and other expenses including food and supply to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness across both shelters.
- Where not currently done by other staff, review invoices for correctness and proper spending; review medical and office inventory spreadsheets to increase efficiency
- Improve controls and process around paperwork and accounts related to payment intake, increasing the ability to track expense or income to shelter location and where possible, to animal
- Design and implement a recruitment strategy for volunteers, help onboard volunteers, and support ongoing volunteer training activities and development of volunteer skills
- Work with Team Leaders to supervise and coach volunteers, to implement and improve volunteer programs, sustain volunteer involvement, assess volunteer satisfaction, and monitor retention
- Work with staff and Team Leaders to develop and/or improve systems for shelter intakes and to improve adoption, foster, enrichment, and other programs
- In conjunction with Program Coordinator, supervise the administrative assistant
- Work with the BOD, staff and Team Leaders to improve and systematize recordkeeping
- Attend POA events as a representative of the Organization
- Prepare a monthly report for the BOD and attend monthly meetings of the Board and Teams.
- Ensure that policies and procedures are followed and updated as needed and work with the BOD, staff, and Team Leaders to address employee and/or volunteer concerns.
- Other duties as assigned
Skills and Specifications: The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual with proven leadership skills, the ability to multi-task, and strong interpersonal, organizational, and decision-making skills. This position requires a person with a knowledge of or willingness to learn volunteer recruitment and retention principles and strategies, an interest in strategic planning, and an understanding or willingness to learn about current shelter practices and animal welfare issues. The position requires a person who is able to build relationships, resolve conflicts, motivate others, and help facilitate a positive and affirming culture towards both people and animals. The successful candidate must be able to cope with the death of a shelter animal. Have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, make difficult decisions, and confidently drive operations and programs in the direction of POA’s mission
Education and Experience
- Three (3) years of experience in a supervisory position with transferable skills, such as a non-profit, animal shelter or rescue, or business administration.
- B.A. or B.S. preferred or equivalent experience in a related field, i.e. Non-Profit management, Volunteer Management, Animal Shelter Management, Animal Welfare Management, Pet Sciences or Humane Leadership
- Understanding of volunteer culture as a volunteer or supervisor. Experience supervising volunteers at a non-profit preferred.
- Experience creating and maintaining budgets
- Excellent communications, supervisory and public relations skills
- Have the ability to work independently with little supervision
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Valid Connecticut driver’s license
Schedule: Primarily Monday to Friday. However, the schedule is dependent upon operational needs which may include an occasional evening/weekend
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $50,000.00 per year
