Veterinary Externship Reimbursement for NYC (VERN)

Veterinary Externship Reimbursement for NYC (VERN) is a pilot reimbursement program designed to address financial barriers often faced by veterinary students wishing to participate in an externship with one of the ASPCA’s New York City-based programs. VERN will reimburse up to $1,000 for (20) 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students to offset transportation, lodging, and food costs incurred while completing the externship.
Timeframe
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis as funds are available.
Reimbursement of $1,000 will be provided for any combination of the following
- Lodging
- Transportation
- Meals
Eligibility
- Individuals currently attending an accredited veterinary school as a 3rd or 4th-year student
- Have applied to attend a NYC Externship (ASPCA Adoption Center Externship, ASPCA Veterinary Animal Hospital Veterinary Externship, ASPCA Community Medicine Externship, or ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Medicine Externship)

Step 1: Apply to one of the following NYC Externships (ASPCA Adoption Center Externship, ASPCA Veterinary Animal Hospital Veterinary Externship, ASPCA Community Medicine Externship, or ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Medicine Externship)
Step 2: Apply to VERN

Please note:
- Please submit your VERN Application immediately after, or soon after, submitting your externship application.
- You must be accepted by an externship program to be considered for VERN.
- Individuals who have already been accepted into an NYC externship program as of January 3rd, 2023 are not eligible for VERN.
- One reimbursement per individual per calendar year.
- Reimbursement funds are provided after completion of externship and up to 30 days after submitting necessary documentation.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
