Veterinary Training Reimbursement (VTR)

The Veterinary Training Reimbursement (VTR, formerly VERN) is a reimbursement program designed to address financial barriers often faced by veterinary students wishing to participate in an externship with one of our ASPCA Veterinary externships in 2025 (ASPCA Adoption Center Externship, ASPCA Animal Hospital Veterinary Externship, ASPCA Community Medicine Externship, ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Medicine Externship, or ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Science Center Externship). VTR will reimburse up to $1,000 for a limited number of 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students to offset transportation, lodging, and food costs incurred while completing their externship.
Timeframe
- The application process is now open.
- 2024 applications will be accepted on a rolling basis as funds are available.
- Reimbursement of up to $1,000 will be provided for any combination of the following:
- Lodging
- Transportation
- Meals
Eligibility
- Individuals currently attending a US AVMA-accredited veterinary school as a 3rd or 4th-year student
- Have applied to and been accepted to attend one of the following ASPCA Externship in 2025 (ASPCA Adoption Center Externship, ASPCA Animal Hospital Veterinary Externship, ASPCA Community Medicine Externship, ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Medicine Externship, or ASPCA Veterinary Forensic Science Center Externship)
- One reimbursement per individual per calendar year.
- You must apply and be approved for VTR before starting your externship to receive reimbursement.
Additional information:
- Please submit your VTR Application after you submit your externship application.
- Reimbursement funds are provided after completion of the externship and up to 30 days after submitting the necessary documentation.
- Incomplete VTR applications will not be considered.
