Resources for Adopt Me Vests
Nothing quite says “adopt me” like, well, a vest that says “Adopt Me”! Besides being dapper, a vest can save a dog’s life. A message like “Adopt Me” is a clear directive for potential adopters, letting them know this animal is available.
Where should a dog sport his vest?
- Out on walks with adoption staff/volunteers
- Out and about in the community with foster parents
- At offsite adoption events
- During photo shoots and media appearances
It’s a good idea to equip foster parents with a vest when they take an animal home. Adoption Ambassadors can be found with dogs in vests at cafes, parks and any other highly trafficked areas where they promote the dogs in their care.
We asked the field to share resources for finding vests, and shelters responded with a great variety of ideas that should provide a starting place in your search for the perfect vest to meet your needs.
If you're lucky enough to have volunteers who can sew, check out this simple vest pattern for instructions to make your own.
Vests vary in price; we recommend searching around online and figuring out the best option for your agency. If you’re having trouble fitting vests into your budget, get creative (as only animal welfare folks can). Try a fundraising campaign for vests. Have fun with it—for example, how about holding a vest design contest on social media and asking for funds to help purchase the winning design.
Orange nylon mesh vests come in three sizes, and price depends on the size chosen.
Besides “Adopt Me,” there are other fun messages you can put on a vest, like "Take me home today" or "Will you be my human?” Some other goodies you can add on to a vest, which vary by company, include:
- Handy pocket for storing business cards or donations
- Your logo, organization name and contact info
- Reflective tape (for those nighttime outings!)

If you're looking for a more economical option for canine promotion via apparel, try enlisting volunteers to make bandanas—a great project for kids!
