Exciting things can happen when shelters and rescues empower foster parents to market and directly adopt out their own foster dogs! The ASPCA researched foster-assisted adoption programs like Adoption Ambassadors, and results showed the following:
- Dogs adopted through the Adoption Ambassadors program compared to dogs adopted directly from the shelter reached a new audience of adopters! Only 30% of those adopting from the foster program had adopted a shelter dog before, compared to 52% of the shelter group.
- Dogs adopted through the Adoption Ambassador program compared to dogs adopted directly from the shelter were returned less frequently. Only 7% of the dogs adopted from the foster program were returned, compared to 17% who were adopted directly from the shelter.
This research suggests Adoption Ambassadors-like programs result in better matchmaking and expose dogs to a different adopter pool—one that may be less likely to visit a shelter.
Plus, placing dogs in foster-assisted adoption programs lets you focus on the dogs who need you the most.
