Behavior Tips for Intact Male Cats

During times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, veterinarians in some communities may stop offering elective surgical services, including spay/neuter. That means adoption agencies must consider fostering or adopting out intact animals, with the requirement that pets get spayed/neutered when regular veterinary services resume.
In the meantime, caregivers can follow these four tips to address any problems that may arise from living with an intact male cat, such as unwanted pregnancy, damaged household items, and embarrassing behaviors:
- Keep cats indoors
- Set up a “kitty urinal”
- Provide rewards and distractions
- Separate intact male and female cats
