Maine C.A.R.E.S: An Animal Cruelty Investigations and Response Workshop
Comprehensive Animal Cruelty Response, Education, and Support
May 20 - 21, 2025 | Portland, Maine | Free
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Portland, ME
This free, two-day hands-on workshop (view sample agenda) is open to law enforcement, prosecutors, veterinarians, and rescue and sheltering organizations and is aimed at raising awareness about animal cruelty, forging key partnerships, and empowering participants to mitigate and prevent cruelty in their communities.
Attendees will engage in a comprehensive case study from start to finish, developing and practicing essential skills in investigation, seizure, evidence documentation, testimony, legal disposition, sheltering, care, and animal placement. They will also learn strategies for effectively managing the complexities of animal-related cases.
For Veterinarians: The training will include an overview of Maine’s mandatory reporting law, ensuring veterinarians understand their legal responsibilities and receive guidance on compliance. Additionally, veterinarians will gain hands-on experience in conducting forensic exams, providing appropriate follow-up care, and preparing reports for court proceedings.
- Law enforcement, animal control officers, and prosecutors: This is a two-day training.
- Sheltering professionals, veterinarians, and other attendees: You may choose between attending both days (May 20 and 21) or just the second day (May 21), which includes role-specific breakout sessions.
Continuing education (CE) credits will be available.
Limited funds may be available to assist some attendees who live more than 75 miles from Portland with travel expenses. If you have any questions or need to change your registration, please reach out to crtrainings@aspca.org
