Veterinarian - Shelter Medicine
Description
Are you a passionate veterinarian who wants to make a meaningful impact on animal welfare? The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is seeking a dedicated Shelter Veterinarian to join our team. Since 1897, we’ve been committed to improving the lives of animals in Southwest Washington, and we invite you to be part of our mission.
About Us
At HSSW, we are a community-driven, donor-supported non-profit, offering a unique opportunity to work with a purpose. Our mission is simple: Rescue. Return. Restore. Rehome. Reconnect. We save one animal at a time while enriching the lives of our community through compassionate service. In addition to our shelter, we operate ReTails Thrift Store, with all proceeds supporting animal care.
Why You’ll Love Working with Us
- Innovative Initiatives: Our Path Forward 2025 strategic plan focuses on lifesaving pathways for animals, keeping pets and families together, expanding our mission, and utilizing cutting-edge technology.
- State-of-the-Art Facility: Our shelter is equipped with digital radiology, dental radiology, in-house blood analyzers, electrocautery, ultrasound, video otoscopy, and more.
- Collaborative Culture: You’ll work with an experienced team, including five veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and numerous volunteers who share your passion for animal care.
- Impact Beyond the Shelter: We provide veterinary care for shelter animals and pets in our community through our mobile clinic and community veterinary clinic, and you'll have opportunities to teach and train students in veterinary care.
Key Responsibilities
As our Shelter Veterinarian, you’ll:
- Provide medical and surgical care for shelter animals, pets in foster care, and pets of low-income families.
- Perform high-volume spay and neuter surgeries and soft-tissue procedures.
- Collaborate with other veterinarians and shelter leadership to create treatment plans and population-level decisions.
- Act as a mentor and leader, helping train staff and volunteers.
- Support our community by delivering compassionate care in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications
- Required: Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) from an accredited university. Eligible for Washington State licensure within 60 days of hire.
- Preferred: 1 year of experience in high-volume spay/neuter or shelter medicine.
- Passion for improving access to veterinary care and working in a collaborative team environment.
What We Offer
- Compensation: $95,000 - $105,000 per year, based on experience.
- Full-Time Benefits: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, matching 401(k), paid time off, and stipends for continuing education and licensing. You may also be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
- Part-Time Benefits: Pro-rated dental, vision, 401(k), and paid time off.
Work Environment
Our team works in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. You’ll need to be comfortable working with animals, including potentially fractious ones, and perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs. with assistance. A sense of humor and a positive attitude are essential in this rewarding role.
