Our new Community Veterinary Clinic serves individuals and families with limited incomes, providing compassionate care to ensure pets stay healthy and in their homes. Location & Schedule:
- This role is based in our new Community Veterinary Clinic, serving HSSW’s mission to support low-income individuals and families.
- The clinic will operate 4-days per week, with no holiday hours.

Responsibilities:
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Medical
- Provide compassionate, quality preventive and basic care to patients, overseeing all aspects of veterinary care during a clinic day including physical examination, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescribing of medications and discharge information in line with typical clinic scheduling
- For Veterinarians Participating in HQHVSN Clinics:
- Perform pre-surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates
- Perform 30-40 high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures per spay/neuter clinic day
- Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications
- Perform and oversee all aspects of minor outpatient surgical procedures
- Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques
- Triage and refer cases that do not fall within our parameters of care as appropriate
- Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with HSSW’s policy and protocols
- Provide support and medical services in special cases as needed, including evaluation and treatment of animals living in hoarding situations
Client Service
- Communicate with all clients in a non-judgement, effective and professional manner; discuss physical examination and test results to allow pet owners to make informed decisions about their pet’s care
- Counsel owners about end of life and other sensitive medical concerns
- Provide discharge instructions for patients and oversee the dispensing of medications
Administrative/Teamwork
- Document exam findings, test results and treatment recommendations
- Collaborate and foster good communication with colleagues
- Participate in veterinary/medical training of clinic staff by coaching, discussion, and demonstration
- Assist in determining the needed scope of services provided by HSSW based on experience with patients and clients and provide input into medical protocols
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent)
- Current veterinary licensure in Washington, or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment
- Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques
- For Veterinarians Participating in HQHVSN Clinics, proficiency in general surgery skills and spay/neuter surgery. Ability to perform 30+ high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures per spay/neuter clinic day preferred
- Knowledge of and ability to use low-stress handling techniques
- Ability to efficiently perform physical examinations, outpatient surgical procedures and diagnose and treat cats and dogs
- Sound clinical judgement and resiliency
- Displays care and concern for the safety and well-being of self, animals, and others, especially in stressful situations
- Able to work standing for 8 or more hours and bend, crouch, kneel and move freely to perform responsibilities that include handling potentially aggressive animals in stressful conditions and navigating the stairs and smaller working spaces of our mobile veterinary clinics
- Ability and willingness to commute to different locations to support HSSW’s stationary and mobile veterinary clinics
Work Experience:
- Experience in high quality, high volume spay/neuter preferred
- Experience in general small animal practice or shelter medicine preferred
- Experience in leadership a plus

Compensation and Benefits:
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.
Staff working 30-hour (Eligible for full benefits and prorated time off)
- Part-time, 32-hour (3-day workweeks): The target hiring range for this role is $75,000 - $82,500
Staff working 40-hour workweeks (Eligible for full benefits and time off):
- Full-time, 40-hour (4-day workweeks): The target hiring range for this role is $100,000 - $110,000 annually
