Who We Are:
Rochester Animal Services is the municipally operated shelter serving the City of Rochester and is dedicated to providing compassionate care, public safety, and lifesaving outcomes for the animals and residents of our community. Serving thousands of animals annually, our shelter has become a trusted resource for pet owners, adopters, rescue organizations, and community members throughout the region. Our mission centers on keeping pets with their families whenever possible, providing a safe haven for animals in need, and supporting successful, lasting adoptions.
One of the things our team is most proud of is the culture we've intentionally built over the last two years. Through thoughtful hiring and a shared commitment to our mission, we've created a small, close-knit, and highly cooperative team that genuinely enjoys working together. Team members support one another, communicate openly, and remain focused on providing the best possible care for the animals and community we serve. The result is a positive, collaborative environment where people feel valued, respected, and empowered to make a difference.
This role offers a rare opportunity to practice shelter medicine with substantial professional independence. General direction is provided by the Director of Animal Services regarding organizational priorities, while broad discretion is afforded in developing and implementing medical procedures, treatment plans, disease prevention strategies, sanitation protocols, vaccination programs, and shelter medicine initiatives. The veterinarian serves as a trusted medical leader whose expertise directly influences the care and wellbeing of every animal entering the shelter.
Our medical team includes Licensed Veterinary Technicians and dedicated animal care staff who work closely with the veterinarian to provide comprehensive care. The shelter is equipped with a full-service surgical suite, digital radiology, blood analyzers, and hematology equipment to support efficient, high-quality care.
The shelter's future is especially bright. The City of Rochester has recently earmarked $2 million for facility improvements and ongoing investments, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Rochester Animal Services is well-positioned to continue expanding its lifesaving efforts and community impact for years to come.
