Online Resource Launches for Owner-to-Owner Adoptions
An online community has launched to connect people who want to adopt pets with people who need to rehome their pets.
Owner-to-owner adoption is the focus of getyourpet.com, and the organization says the method could reduce shelter intake by as much as a third, freeing up limited and precious shelter resources.
The community is monitored and prohibits the sale of pets. It’s free for owners to publish the profiles of pets they need to surrender, and then notifications are sent to registered adopters in the same geographical locations.
“Getyourpet.com provides a real alternative to shelter surrender for pet owners who can’t keep their pets, while supporting the good work of shelters across our country,” the organization says. Each pet adoption includes a voucher for a visit to a veterinarian and other benefits to make sure the adopted pet gets the right start in their new home.
The ASPCA believes that keeping pets out of shelters and helping them go from one good home to another can save more lives and enable hardworking shelters to use limited resources for pets who have no other alternative.
How to Be a Shelter Partner
When the site “partners” with a shelter, it asks the shelter to recommend getyourpet.com to anyone in need of rehoming a dog or cat and to list its information on the shelter’s website.
Get Your Pet says its public relations, social media and marketing teams will then draft press releases and contact local media, plus allocate AdWords and Facebook advertising dollars to generate more animal welfare awareness in the shelter’s community.
