Job Type: Full - Time | Location: Platteville, WI, and surrounding Grant County | Collaborates with the Executive Director of Shelter Operations | $40,000-$47,000
Kennel Manager is responsible for providing training, discipline, leadership, and mentorship to all staff; overseeing and ensuring the general health and wellness of all animals at the shelter; ensure legal/regulatory compliance; oversee daily sheltering functions using best - practice standards to move animals safely into homes; lead care, adoption, fostering, and enrichment programs; coordinate with law enforcement, vets, rescues, and emergency management; maintain facility safety and cleanliness.
Direct Supervision
The Shelter Manager directly supervises up to 6 animal care/kennel technicians.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Shelter Operations and Leadership
● Oversee daily shelter operations, workflow, and staffing coordination. Create, update, and implement training and cleaning protocols and SOPS.
● Monitor shelter capacity, animal movement, and operational priorities.
● Coordinate transports and placement logistics with partner organizations and veterinarians.
● Support operational reporting, shelter data tracking, and required documentation.
● Track and maintain sufficient inventories of necessary operational, medical, and building supplies.
● Assist with planning, coordination, and execution of large-scale shelter events.
Staff Management &Support
● Provide supervision, coaching, and support to kennel technicians and volunteers.
● Set expectations, give feedback, and conduct performance reviews with ongoing professional development .
● Support employee onboarding, training, scheduling, and operational coverage. Assist with performance management, employee concerns, and operational follow-up.
● Maintain a respectful, collaborative, and solutions - oriented work environment.
● Communicate with the Shelter Director regularly and efficiently on all operational and personnel issues.
● Request and supervise volunteers, as necessary.
Animal Welfare & Customer Experience
● Ensure humane and compassionate care of all shelter animals
● Support feeding, cleaning, enrichment, medication administration, and continuity of care.
● Collaborate with Clinic staff regarding medical needs and treatment plans.
● Support behavior, enrichment, animal movement, and length - of - stay reduction efforts.
● Reinforce customer service standards and support positive interactions with adopters and community members.
Safety & Compliance
● Promote compliance with shelter SOPS, OSHA guidelines, and safety protocols.
● Uphold care/disease - control protocols and document intake, treatment, adoption, and euthanasia decisions.
● Maintain safety, injury, and emergency - response policies; conduct periodic risk assessments; enforce background - check protocols; protect

Qualification
● Either certified or a Veterinary Technician with 5+ years of experience in animal sheltering, veterinary support, or a related field preferred.
● Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
● Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast - paced environment.
● Commitment to humane animal care.
● Ability to obtain and maintain required certification.
● Valid driver's license required.
Working Conditions
● Mixed office/shelter/outdoor environment with exposure to animal dander, waste, chemicals, noise, weather, and zoonotic/injury risk.
● Requires standing, lifting (50lbs solo /75 lbs assisted), and other physical activity, plus occasional evenings, weekends, and emergency hours.
