2026 ASPCA New World Screwworm Direct Support Grant

Grant Description

In the face of an outbreak of New World Screwworm (NWS) infestations in the United States, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) is making emergency grant funding available to support NWS prevention and treatment efforts in dogs, cats, and equines in states with infestations or areas with an elevated risk of infestation.

Funding Amounts

Up to $500,000 is available for this grant opportunity. 

Qualifying organizations can receive:

• Up to $45,000 for New World Screwworm prevention and treatment medication based on per-animal cost
• Up to $5,000 for costs related to a Veterinarian of Record to supervise administration of medication for New World Screwworm
• Up to $750 per-animal for veterinary assessment, evaluation, and treatment (including humane euthanasia and disposal, if indicated) for animals currently infested with New World Screwworm

Expenses incurred on or after June 3, 2026 (date of first confirmed New World Screwworm case in the United States) are eligible for reimbursement or funding.

Eligibility

Organizations in states with USDA designated infested zones and in states adjacent to those with designated infested zones are eligible to apply for this opportunity. 

Applicants must have a contractual or employer relationship with a veterinarian who will provide oversight of the prevention and treatment of New World Screwworm. This means applicants either have a staff veterinarian or have an executed contract or are in the process of securing a contract with a Veterinarian of Record.

• A Veterinarian of Record is a licensed veterinarian who has a formal agreement with an animal shelter or rescue group to provide medical oversight, write treatment protocols, and allow the organization to use their license to buy medical supplies. Priority consideration will be given to applicants: 

• operating in states with active infested zones, with the highest priority given to organizations operating within active infested zones.
• that have not previously had the veterinary support required for treatment and administration of medications for New World Screwworm, but who have formed a Veterinarian of Record relationship for this grant opportunity.

Applicants must meet ASPCA Grantee Organizational Standards:

• If a past ASPCA grant recipient, applicants must be current on all reporting requirements for such grant.
• If a nonprofit organization, applicants must:
  • be an incorporated or organized legal entity in good standing with the Secretary of State in the state where the organization is incorporated or organized.
  • have a board of at least three (3) members with a majority of independent members with neither board chair nor treasurer receiving compensation from the organization.
  • have a current/active charitable registration in the state of the Grantee’s primary location (for grants ≥ $25,000).

Grant Review Timeline

• RFP Opens: August 19th at 9 a.m. ET. 
• RFP Closes: When available funds are expended or October 31st at 6 p.m. ET, whichever comes first.
• Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.  
• Finalists will be notified via email and invited to our grant management system.
