Veterinarian
Reports To: Executive Director / Board of Directors
Location: Owensboro, Kentucky
Position Summary
The Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing and delivering all veterinary services for rescue animals and public clinic patients. This role ensures compliance with all applicable regulations while maximizing clinic resources to provide high-quality, cost-effective medical care. The Veterinarian will also supervise clinic staff and contribute to the training of employees, volunteers, and program participants if it falls under their scope of practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a full spectrum of veterinary services, including preventive care, diagnostics, surgery, and treatment.
- Operate the clinic in compliance with the standards and regulations of the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners.
- Ensure the humane care and treatment of all animals under the organization’s supervision.
- Oversee and enforce proper pre-, peri-, and post-operative protocols for all patients.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate clinic staff to maintain best practices and high standards of patient care.
- Manage treatment plans including but not limited to vaccine/intake protocols, housing and sanitation protocols, disease prevention and treatment protocols.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in accordance with legal and professional requirements.
- Maintain professionalism and a collaborative attitude in interactions with staff, adopters, volunteers, and community members.
- Remain current with advancements in veterinary medicine and shelter medicine practices.
- Assist with public programs such as Spay and neuter, Trap-Neuter-Release,
Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited institution.
- Current and unrestricted license with the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners.
- Must hold a DEA license or be in the process of obtaining one.
- Prior experience in shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter strongly preferred but not required.
- Proficiency in soft tissue surgery, including high-volume spay/neuter procedures.
- Strong leadership, supervisory, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining precision and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and organizational mission.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to safely handle animals of all sizes, including lifting up to 50 pounds. The ability to stand/walk for 6-8 hours daily.
- Routine exposure to animals, allergens, zoonotic diseases, and potential animal-related injuries.
