Hurricane Katrina 20th Anniversary Disaster Preparedness Grants
Timeframe: Friday, August 29th, at 9 a.m. CT. - Tuesday, September 30th, at 5 p.m. CT.
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it wrought, and in recognition of the lessons learned from it, the ASPCA is providing up to $500,000 in funding to improve disaster preparedness for animals in coastal and other high-risk communities in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Grant Amount
Grants will range from $20,000-$50,000. The total funding amount available for this grant opportunity is up to $500,000.
Eligibility
Applicants must be located in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama (the eligible states) and either be a non-profit animal welfare organization or municipal agency with a focus on animal welfare, or a non-profit organization or municipal agency providing general disaster assistance looking to provide support to animals in affected communities.
Preference will be given to applicants that are any of the following:
- Located in or serving coastal communities in the eligible states, or located in or serving other communities in the eligible states marked as very high or relatively high risk on this FEMA map (each, a preferred community)
- Brick and mortar shelters located in or serving a preferred community
- Authorized disaster response organizations in the eligible states that are integrated into a jurisdiction’s emergency disaster response through an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), by being written into the jurisdiction’s disaster plan, by way of a formal request on official letterhead from an agency having jurisdiction, or by similar means that verify the organization’s official and ongoing role

Applicants must meet ASPCA Grantee Organizational Standards:
- If a past ASPCA grant recipient, applicants must be current on all reporting requirements for such grant
- If a nonprofit organization, applicants must:
- Be an incorporated or organized legal entity in good standing with the Secretary of State in the state where the organization is incorporated or organized
- Have a board of at least 4 members with a majority of independent members with neither board chair nor treasurer receiving compensation from the organization
- Have a current/active charitable registration in the state of the Grantee’s primary location (for grants ≥ $25,000)
Funding Restrictions and Parameters
Grant funds can be used for costs related to (but not limited to) the following:
- Training
- Emergency shelter, veterinary equipment, and other supplies necessary for temporary sheltering
- Field rescue gear and supplies
- Animal transport equipment and supplies, such as crates (but not vehicles for companion animal transport or housing)
- Pet supply caches for disaster-related community distribution
- Generators
Grant funds cannot be used for:
- Ongoing/preexisting expenses such as staff salaries and general facility costs that are included in your regular operating budget or facility or vehicle repairs
- Perishable items (vaccines, food, etc.)
- Vehicles or trailers for companion animal transport or housing
Grant Review Timeline
- RFP will open on Friday, August 29th, at 9 a.m. CT.
- RFP will close on Tuesday, September 30th, at 5 p.m. CT.
- Finalists will be notified via email on or around October 27th and invited to complete a supplemental application in our grant management system.
