When someone is truly unable to keep their dog or cat, they are able to assure humane care for that pet by relinquishing him to a shelter. Unfortunately, that is not the case for horse owners – often there is no safe or humane option available when one is unable to keep, sell or give away their horse. That is why we are testing a model to do just that.
The ASPCA Regional Support Center, in partnership with The Right Horse Initiative, was a pilot program for horse owners in Cooke, Grayson, Wise, Denton, Collin, Tarrant, and Dallas counties in Texas. The center offered no-cost assistance to horse owners.
The six-month pilot provided:
A safe place for horse owners to relinquish horses who need rehoming
Limited access to medical care for horses in need
Euthanasia and related services for horses in need of those resources
Over the course of six months, the ASPCA Regional Support Center, supported by the Rosalind and Franklyn Schaefer Family Foundation, helped 59 equines.
