The Spay/Neuter Surgeon is a trained and licensed Veterinarian responsible for performing 25-40 surgeries per day in a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter setting, primarily in our stationary spay/neuter facility, Pet Fix Savannah. The person in this position works an approximate 10 hour day, 4 days a week while also being availbale for on call emergency questions. Surgeon will be working with a small medical team, providing high-quality pre-, peri-, and postoperative care to cats and dogs. Person must be able to perform cryptorchid, hernia repair, and pyometra surgeries if presented. Patients include owned pets, homeless adoptable cats and dogs, and free-roaming cats. Some animals may be large and/or fractious. The Spay/Neuter Surgeon performs physical examinations on all patients to ensure their candidacy for surgery and ensures recovery of all patients. This surgeon spays/neuters cats and dogs using standardized surgical techniques as put forth by Pet Fix Savannah and the Humane Alliance. In addition to clinical duties, this position also has important leadership and training roles. While the day-to-day operations of the clinic fall to other staff members, the spay-neuter surgeon plays a key role in establishing a positive atmosphere, good comunication, and guidance to staff when it comes to medical procedures and following policy set in place. The spay-neuter veterinarian works closely with the Public Programs Manager to ensure that policies and protocols are accurate, up-to-date, and in line with the standards of care laid out by Humane Alliance and the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. The spay/neuter veterinarian also works closely with the Public Programs Manager to identify areas where staff may need additional training, and assists in either providing this training or coordinating with others to ensure that it occurs. This position will also include working with Humane Society for Greater Savannah medical staff with diagnostics, vaccines, and procedures on shelter animals when necessary.
