Greenville County Animal Care (“Animal Care”) is looking for a full-time Shelter Veterinarian who is passionate about animal welfare, helping people, and growing our veterinary support resources in our community. This position works under the direction of the Medical Director and Head Shelter Veterinarian and is responsible for medical care and treatment of approximately 7,000 dogs and cats annually. Primary duties include treating animals in foster care, examining newly arrived pets with medical conditions, daily rounds of pets currently in the shelter, assistance with staff training, participation in animal cruelty forensic investigations and/or courtroom testimony, and diagnosis and treatment of animal illnesses and relief from suffering as needed. This position assists the Head Shelter Veterinarian to oversee the care of individual animals while maintaining the overall herd health in an animal shelter setting, and assists in the spay/neuter and pet wellness clinic as needed.
Candidates must have a doctoral degree from an accredited institution, a valid South Carolina Veterinary license, a valid South Carolina driver’s license, and a current DEA and SCDHEC Controlled Substance license. Candidates must also be accredited in South Carolina. Ideal candidates will have experience working in an animal shelter environment and have a strong understanding of shelter medicine, however new graduates and experienced practice veterinarians are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced, emotionally challenging environment and remain organized to complete daily tasks.
Greenville County offers a competitive compensation package, paid time off, health and dental insurance, retirement plan, and all licensure fees are paid by the employer. There are no evening work shifts with some flexibility in the schedule; however, this position is required to be on-call for staff questions on some evenings and weekends. Greenville County is an eligible organization for the federal student loan forgiveness program.
Greenville County Animal Care is a division of the County of Greenville and the largest open-admission municipal shelter in South Carolina with a care capacity of 125 cats and 250 dogs. We employ 85 staff, including a Medical Director, two full-time veterinarians, five part-time veterinarians and sixteen veterinary assistants. Animal Care has an average annual intake of 7,000 and a life-saving rate of 90%+ with an objective to save every healthy and treatable pet. Some of the successful lifesaving programs that we are most proud of include our very robust foster and adoption program, surrender prevention, pet food pantry, supported self-rehoming, a pet wellness clinic for low-income pet owners, and much more. Up to 95% of the spay/neuter surgeries performed at our state-of-the-art clinic are free to the public and targeted to reduce the overpopulation of cats and large dogs. Our clinic is a teaching hospital and we frequently host veterinary externs from all over the world and students in vet tech programs. We have a strong commitment to getting lost pets home quickly and keeping pets and their family together. Animal Care was also selected in 2020 as a Tier 1 Pilot Shelter for the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) global initiative to focus efforts on community-centered animal services that reinforces the importance of personal and social responsibility for all animals and strengthens Greenville County’s vision for a thriving, diverse community with an unmatched quality of life.
