About HSC
HSC has been around for over 46 years. We have recently moved into our brand-new Animal Resource Center, and we are thrilled to have a brand-new state-of-the-art facility which allows us to be able to offer more comprehensive services to our community. Our Dog Training Program began at our new location in 2023 and now we are happy to help our community with low-cost training. We offer classes like Dog Basics for Everyone, Puppy Playgroups, 6-Week Group Training, Private Lessons, Specialty Focus Groups and the Canin Good Citizen Certification. In 2023 our Dog Training Program successfully launched new public dog training programs and taught 297 dog training classes to 734 participants.
The Role
Some of the main duties for our Dog Trainer are:
- To work collaboratively with HSC designated staff to develop, implement, promote, and monitor dog training activities.
- Overseeing the public dog training classes, animal behavior inquiries, assisting with secondary evaluations for shelter animals when requested and conducting private evaluations for community owned pets.
- Directly monitors dog training program revenue goals and budget.
Qualifications & Expectations
- Enthusiasm for the mission of the Humane Society of Charlotte and helping animals and people in our community
- Required: High school diploma or equivalent
- Required: Experience in the use of positive reinforcement methods, including appropriate use of humane training products
- Preferred: CPDT certification or equivalent (CPDT-KA, KPA, IAABC, Nose Works certification, Dog Trainer Academy, ABC, etc.)
- Preferred: A minimum of one-year paid experience working with animals in a kennel, shelter or similar environment
- Knowledge of applied operant conditioning, adult learning theory, and dog training equipment and methods of all types helpful
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products
- Ability to work independently and effectively with other managers and line staff in order to accomplish daily tasks as well as strategic plans.
- Bilingual skills a plus
- Must have a reliable mode of transportation
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evening and weekends as needed
