Description
Managerial Duties:
- Assure regulatory compliance relating to the practice of veterinary medicine within the shelter.
- Establish low stress, fear free handling protocols.
- Review and create medical, surgical, pain management, and anesthetic protocols.
- Oversee disease management protocols to ensure a high standard of care and best practices.
- Schedule veterinarians and veterinary technicians so as to assure that all shelter needs are met.
- Collaborate with the Community Care Center Manager to assure that public clinics are appropriately staffed and that supplies are adequately stocked.
- Mentor medical staff (licensed vets and vet techs) and support a learning environment in order to continue to advance the medical department.
- Manage externships of visiting veterinarians and/or students.
- Curate continuing education presentations and trainings for staff to enhance medical knowledge.
- Prepare annual performance evaluations for veterinary technicians.
- Maintain fiscal stability and work within a budget to review and determine equipment and supply needs.
- Manage on-site inventory of controlled substances, ordering, oversight of controlled drug log books, and perform monthly drug counts.
- Attend weekly operations meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Medical Duties:
- Examine animals returning from foster care and coordinate with the Foster Program Coordinator on medical concerns and treatment plans for foster animals.
- Start and complete medical treatment and prescriptions for shelter animals.
- Perform high volume spay and neuter surgeries on dogs and cats with varying temperaments, sizes, and ages.
- Perform pre-surgical exams on animals to determine if they are healthy enough for spay/neuter and determine appropriate plan of action if they are not approved for surgery.
- Perform additional minor surgeries including, but not limited to: growth removals, hernia repairs, abscess drainage, enucleations, and medically necessary amputations.
- Manage complications and/or emergencies that arise from surgical procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA).
- Must have a current, valid license that allows the practice of veterinary medicine.
- Three years of previous shelter medicine experience is preferred.
- Three years of previous supervisory experience is preferred.
