DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provides day-to-day operations for medical care of all shelter animals housed at Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center to include (but not limited to): 2. Daily rounds to assess the shelter population. 3. Works closely with Animal Care Technicians and other staff to meet needs of shelter animals. 4. Diagnoses and treats medical conditions; animal illness and injury; monitors health of facility animals and determines appropriate medical care, health protocols, vaccine and surgery schedules, readiness for transfer (including Accreditation to be able to write Certificates of Veterinary Inspections), and recommendations for euthanasia. 5. Prescribes and administers medicine to animals and monitors the administration of drugs by trained staff. Ensures inventory of controlled substances and other drugs and ensures that drugs are maintained, logged, secured and properly disposed as per federal, state and county laws. 6. Provides treatment programs tailored to individual animal needs and special physiological, anatomical, or behavioral requirements. 7. Provides nutritional consultation through physical examinations, laboratory testing and evaluation of nutritional content of diets. Evaluates animal health and nutritional status of sheltered animals on a daily basis and provides consultation to management regarding well animal husbandry and care. Receives and evaluates staff concerns regarding animal health; recommends veterinary treatment as indicated under national shelter standards and guidelines of the veterinary professional. 8. Monitors progress of all patients treated at BCACS and ensures accurate record keeping and statistical information. Maintains individual animal and group medical records. 9. Evaluates, provides treatment and supervises care for neonatal animals that require human rearing or intervention and works with Foster Coordinator to obtain foster care. 10. Creates and implements treatment plans. Follows disease control measures, vaccination protocols, nutrition and feeding protocols, parasite control measures, preventative medicine procedures, emergency evaluation, treatment and procedures, pre-adoption exams and disaster response medical procedures. 11. May be called to duty during disaster response emergencies. 12. Conducts high quality/high volume shelter spay/neuter surgeries (including pediatric); manages all aspects of the procedures including anesthesia and post-operative care of the patient. 13. Performs pre-surgical examinations on animals. 14. Performs anesthesia using a wide variety of anesthetic agents and techniques for diagnostic and surgical procedures; perform immobilization or tranquilization of aggressive or dangerous animals. 15. Provides on-going training programs in humane animal care and handling, zoonosis, diseases identification and prevention, behavior, breed identification, first aid and safety. Recommends, develops, implements, and establishes section priorities for policies, procedures, long and short term goals and objectives, work standards and training sessions in care, behavior, enrichment, medical health, treatment, and disposition. 16. Represents BCACS and participates in scheduled animal health fairs and vaccine clinics to be held at the facility or various off-site locations. 17. Serves as a liaison for public relations for medical related information. May present training programs to the public or other Animal Care Services personnel relating to animal care, behavior, health and maintenance. 18. Assists animal care enforcement section in complex field investigations involving neglect and cruelty of animals, prepare reports and testify in court as expert witness. 19. Performs or assists in the performance of humane animal euthanasia procedures; concurs with staff euthanasia recommendations; ensures safe and humane handling of animals during procedure. 20. Promotes safety and adheres to OSHA requirements in the workplace; responsible for SDS compliance and coordinates with Risk Management to ensure compliance with safety requirements and the utilization of best practices in the workplace. 21. In the absence of the Director and Veterinarian, may supervise and monitor a variety of activities at the BCACS resource center performed by other sections. 22. Performs duties of lower level classifications, as needed in emergent situations, to provide adequate coverage and customer service; works as a team with department staff to ensure cross functionality and back up support as needed.
