Denver Animal Protection (DAP) provides animal care and protection services for all of Denver County. We foster the human-animal bond by protecting the safety and welfare of Denver's animals and citizens. DAP is committed to providing humane care to companion animals; reuniting lost pets with their owners; adopting pets to loving homes; enforcing Denver County animal ordinances; and proactively educating the public about animals, their needs, and DAP's critical role as a community resource.
Denver Animal Protection is seeking an Animal Protection Officer Supervisor to supervise animal protection employees who enforce local and regional laws concerning the care and treatment of animals, investigate complaints of non-compliance with animal ordinances and laws, perform facility compliance inspections, perform court liaison duties pertaining to the issuance of legal summonses, and provide education to the public regarding public health, animal care, safety, and welfare.
Additionally, the Animal Protection Officer Supervisor:
- Provides day to day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high-performance service environment that enforces local and regional laws concerning the care and treatment of animals and recommends process improvements and changes in practices and procedures to increase operating efficiency and expedite work flow
- Plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of animal protection staff members, provides technical expertise to staff, and establishes unit and staff work goals and objectives
- Trains staff members on local and regional laws and ordinances, testifying in court, and providing training to the public on the responsibilities of pet ownership and proper pet care and orients new staff with policies, procedures, and practices
- Supervises the issuance of legal summonses regarding various animal control violations and testifies in court on law violations involving cases of animal cruelty, neglect, abuse, and/or abandonment
- Supervises the maintenance and repair of the Animal Shelter facilities and equipment
- Maintains detailed daily reports of protection activities and animal inspections, ensures that staff prepares comprehensive records, reports, and documentation that complies with standards and requirements
- Implements safety standards and develops procedures to ensure compliance
- Develops or modifies work plans, methods, and procedures and determines work priorities
- Assigns and distributes work, reviews work for accuracy and completeness, and returns assignments with recommendations for proper completion
- Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines standards for problem resolution including escalations from clients
- Develops the performance enhancement plan, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and formally evaluates the work of employees
- Responds to formal and informal employee grievances and prepares written response
- Documents causes for disciplinary action and initiates letters of reprimand and formal recommendations for disciplinary action
- Provides work instruction and assists employees with difficult and/or unusual assignments
- Performs humane euthanasia on animals that are severely injured or have rabies
- Operates vehicle and two-way radio in performance of duties
- Assists in the development of departmental budgets
- Reviews "problem inspections" of establishments and ensures compliance with municipal ordinances, laws, regulations and contracts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Our ideal candidate will possess the following preferred experience, skills, or education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science, Criminal Justice, Public Health, Environmental Health, or related field.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Experience designing, planning, and implementing major projects.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts.
- Willingness to work outside and be exposed to inclement weather conditions.
- Willingness to perform animal euthanasia.
- Willingness to handle sick and/or vicious animals.
- Willingness to clean up animal excrement/secretions.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
In order to be moved forward in the application process, you must have/obtain:
- State Officer Certification.
- Bite Stick Certificate.
- OC Spray Certificate.
- Euthanasia by Injection Certification.
NOTE: If you do not possess a current certification, you must procure your State Officer certification in 12 months and Bite Stick/OC Spray Certificates in 6 months.

- Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health or applied sciences as required by the specific opening.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience performing Environmental/Public Health analytical work, conducting scientific research, operations analysis, and assisting on technical projects for purposes of Environmental/Public Health protection, and regulatory compliance.
- Three (3) years of experience conducting environmental/public health inspections, investigations or environmental/public health management activities.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
- License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
