Grant Opportunities for Equine Organizations in 2021

We combed through upcoming grant plans from a variety of funders that explicitly list equines as a beneficiary or implicitly include them as animals in need. (Be sure to read the complete guidelines and check application deadlines!)
National Opportunities
- After the Finish Line: Grants are awarded to eligible tax-exempt organizations nationwide to help offset costs of care for Off Track Thoroughbreds. Application deadline: 20th of each month.
- American Horse Rescue Network: Grants are awarded to eligible tax-exempt organizations nationwide that meet all grant eligibility criteria. Rolling application deadlines.
- American Humane: Second Chance Grants program provides financial assistance for tax-exempt animal welfare organizations nationwide to help offset medical costs associated with rescuing animals who have suffered from abuse/neglect.
Rolling application deadlines. - Banfield Foundation: Grants are awarded to eligible tax-exempt organizations nationwide that provide veterinary assistance to pet owners and work to keep pets in homes with their families. Rolling application deadlines.
- Doris Day Animal Foundation: Grants are awarded to tax-exempt animal welfare organizations nationwide to help defray the costs of care, food, veterinary treatment, and/or adoption preparations, primarily for senior companion animals.
LOI deadlines: January 31, April 30, July 31, and October 31, 2021. - EQUUS Foundation: Grants are awarded to tax-exempt organizations nationwide that are Equus Foundation Equine Welfare Network Partners and meet all grant eligibility criteria.
Applications open January 1 and close April 30, 2021. - Gus Hawthorne Foundation: Grants are awarded to tax-exempt animal welfare organizations nationwide that provide care for at-risk animals and meet all grant eligibility criteria.
Application deadline: February 15, 2021 - Thoroughbred Charities of America: Grants are awarded to eligible tax-exempt organizations nationwide that advance TCA’s mission of providing a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers, and helping the people who care for them.
Application dates to be announced on the organization’s website early in 2021.

Geographically Restricted Opportunities
- California Retirement Management Account/CAMRA (California only): Grants are awarded in the state of California to tax-exempt organizations that retire, retrain, and re-home Thoroughbreds that have raced at partnering tracks in California.
Application opens in Summer 2021. - Thelma Doelger Trust for Animals (California only): Grants are awarded to tax-exempt animal welfare organizations that operate in the state of California, in accordance with eligibility guidelines.
Rolling application deadlines. - Animal Assistance Foundation (Colorado only): Grants are awarded in the state of Colorado to tax-exempt animal welfare organizations that enhance the Five Freedoms for companion animals.
Application opens September 1 and closes September 25, 2021. - Miccio Foundation (Iowa only): Standard and Mini-Grants are available to organizations licensed by the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship towards efforts such as facility renovation, animal medical care, and adoption support that will have an immediate, direct and measurable impact on improving animal welfare in a target community.
Application deadlines: May 1 and November 1, 2021 - Equine Protection Fund (New Mexico only): Grants are awarded in the state of New Mexico for expenses associated with gelding, emergency hay, medical care, disaster recovery, and euthanasia.
Rolling application deadlines. - Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust (Ohio & Great Lakes region only): Grants are awarded to tax-exempt animal welfare organizations that enhance the well-being of animals in Ohio and elsewhere in the Great Lakes region (including IL, IN, MI, WI, Western PA, Upstate NY, and Northeastern MN) in accordance with eligibility guidelines.
Application deadlines: May 15, September 15, and December 15, 2021. - Kirkpatrick Foundation (Central Oklahoma only): Grants are awarded to tax-exempt organizations that advance the well-being of animals in Central Oklahoma, in accordance with eligibility guidelines.
Rolling application deadlines for grants under $10,000. For grants over $10,000, deadlines are June 1 and December 1, 2021.
