I am passionate about enrichment. My background in zoos and laboratories focused heavily on enrichment for a variety of species – from orangutans to pythons. The opportunity to behave in a species-typical manner is vital – add to that choice, control and predictability, and you can help to decrease stress for animals in your care. Decreasing stress can decrease disease and the likelihood of behavior issues. Creative enrichment ideas are fun to develop, and can save lives.
To help get your creative juices flowing, check out a few here from my days working as Curator of Behavior and Research at the Sedgwick County Zoo.
I know there are some really creative folks out there… what enrichment are you doing in your facility that may help save lives at other shelters? I would love to highlight your work – send me your video links or leave them in the comment box, and I will feature some on a future blog and also on our ASPCApro Facebook page. Don’t have video?
