Partnership Opportunity

Share the Love Contest 2011

For the 4th year in a row, the ASPCA participated in the Subaru “Share the Love” year-end event.  As part of the promotion, the ASPCA created a “Share the Love” grant program – more than $884,000 in shelter grants have been awarded to organizations in all 50 states to fund Mega Match-a-Thons, vaccination clinics, spay/neuter, vet care, and pet food banks.

The ASPCA also created a shelter incentive contest to match local shelters with Subaru dealers to conduct events that promote pet adoption. The match making generated almost 100 local events and found homes for over 1,000 pets.  Approximately $86,000 was also raised for the local shelters as part of those events.  In addition, prize money totaling $35,000 was awarded to the following shelters that created stellar life saving partnerships with their local Subaru dealers:

First prize ($20,000 grant from the ASPCA):
Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society (PAWS), Wakefield, MA

Second Place ($5,000 grant from the ASPCA):
Friends of Sangamon County, Springfield, IL

Third Place (5-$2,000 grants from the ASPCA):
Spokanimal, Spokane, WA
Irvine Animal Care Center, Irvine, CA
Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, Charlotte, NC
Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, Colorado Springs, CO
Kent County SPCA, Camden, DE

Partnership with Subaru: It's a Win-Win

Seventy percent of Subaru owners have a pet, and almost half of Subaru owners have a dog. Inspired by its pet-loving customers, Subaru of America, Inc. has built a strong partnership with the ASPCA to help bring pets and people together. And many of the over 600 Subaru dealers nationwide are looking to join the cause as well, through collaborations with animal welfare agencies in their neighborhoods — namely with organizations such as yours!

Local partnerships increase traffic for both shelters and dealerships.  To make it easier for animal welfare agencies to collaborate, the ASPCA has developed a list of potential ideas to inspire you, including:

  • Off-site adoption event (the most popular request made by Subaru dealers)
  • Food/Toy drive
  • Dog Wash
  • Pet Talent Shows
  • Pet Photography (i.e. pet pictures with Santa)
  • Agility Day
  • Spay/Neuter Promotion
  • Micro-chipping clinic

Your only limitation is your collective imagination. Watch this short Sample Event Ideas tutorial for some event planning ideas and to see a Shelter-Subaru collaboration in action, or download our event planning tips/ideas guide (.pdf).

Approximately 200 agencies have already conducted adoption events under this program since inception. Animal welfare groups that choose to conduct an event with a Subaru dealer may benefit in many ways, which may include:

• Free publicity (inclusion in dealer promotion: e.g. flyers, TV, radio, website,  print ads)
• Increased exposure in the community
• Potential for more adoptions
• Potential for a long-term relationship with the local Subaru dealer(s)

Long Term Relationships

We encourage your organization to take advantage of this special opportunity to work with Subaru in your community. You may find that some dealers may be interested in supporting you on an ongoing basis, representing a potential new long term sponsor for some of your initiatives.

Keep in mind that many Subaru dealers send out communications to people who have purchased their cars — and 7 in 10 Subaru owners have pets. These Subaru owners are passionate about their cars and their pets. This audience of animal lovers represents a great base of potential new supporters for animal welfare agencies across the country.

If your organization is interested in working with a local Subaru dealer, complete this form or contact Rebecca Frommer in Corporate Partnerships at sharethelove@aspca.org or call 212-876-7700 x4684. Once we have your information, the ASPCA Corporate Partnerships Department will try to find a partner in your area.
