Re-homing Services

Helping People Find Homes for Animals They Cannot Keep

Since owner turn-ins account for a high percentage of cats and dogs ending up in their shelter, the Richmond, Virginia SPCA provides pet owners with resources to find new homes for animals that they cannot keep.

"For most people, learning that they can and should re-home their own animal is an AHA! moment...most just hadn't thought about it and have no idea how to do it. They just always looked to the shelter as the answer for all things animal related."
Richmond SPCA

What It Takes

  • A bulletin board or website where owners can post information about their pets.
  • A packet of materials, such as sample fliers and instructions for screening potential adopters.

What We Like

  • Putting the responsibility for re-homing pets where it belongs, with the owners who can no longer keep them.
  • Guiding owners through a responsible placement process and providing extensive, user-friendly resources to encourage them to do the job right.
