Tools for Humane Discourse within the Animal Welfare Community

Do you believe there is no place in the humane movement for physical or verbal intimidation, defamation, harassment, personal attacks, or threats of violence?

The ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the National Federation of Humane Societies (NFHS), and the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators (SAWA) all agree on this basic principle for our field, and hope you will join an effort to look for opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, and cooperation, rather than diverting precious resources toward efforts only meant to destroy organizations and individuals.

Review a collection of tools designed to help animal welfare organizations and the general public work together for positive, productive change in their communities, and avoid the kind of destructive tactics that ultimately harm animals and move us further from our shared goal of saving lives and ending euthanasia. Download these tools:

Could Empowering Foster Parents Be Your Secret Weapon to Saving Lives?

Does empowering fosters to find adopters and adopt out their foster dogs save more lives? Recent ASPCA research tested this premise by studying the Louisiana SPCA's Fosters as Adoption Agents project.

The data suggests that adopting directly from foster homes enables a shelter to reach a pool of adopters who might not have considered visiting a shelter to adopt. The research strongly supports the notion that empowering fosters to adopt out the animals in their care is a powerful, life-saving tool for:

  • Stretching shelter capacity
  • Reducing returns
  • Most importantly, opening up a whole new market of good homes for shelter animals.

Subaru's New Share the Love Grant Program

The ASPCA has been selected, once again, as one of the five charities to participate in the Subaru Share the Love holiday sales event. For the past four years, the Share the Love promotion has provided an extraordinary platform to promote pet adoption and raise funds by engaging Subaru dealers and thousands of people who shop for new cars.

A new Share the Love Grant Fund will fund costs associated with equine, animal sheltering, and sterilization programs.  Grants will range from $500 to $10,000, and will be awarded in all 50 states. Animal shelters, animal control agencies, and non-sheltering animal welfare organizations may submit letters of inquiry November 7, 2011 – January 1, 2012. If invited to complete the full application, the application is due on January 17. Read our grant guidelines for more information and linstructions to submit your online letter of inquiry.

P.S. Participate in the Share the Love adoption event contest where you can win up to $20,000 by conducting an event with your local Subaru dealer.

P.P.S. Some Subaru dealers are looking for events to sponsor, so we are creating a master calendar of events that we'll share with Subaru.  If you have any events planned through 2012, send info to sharethelove@aspca.org ASAP.

What's the Easiest Way to Reduce Infectious Disease?

Did you know that washing your hands is the single most important thing that can be done to reduce infectious disease in an animal shelter? Denver's Dumb Friends League wanted to foster a commitment to basic sanitation, so the staff took a pledge after a basic training session, then laminated and posted the pledge in a visible location. This is but one idea in our new Tip of the Week series on The Shelters' Edge. Every Monday, we're posting tips we've seen that may make your life a little easier, make a routine process go a little faster, or deliver some extra comfort for the animals in your care.

Bonus – subscribe to The Shelters' Edge blog so the tips arrive in your inbox every Monday.
