Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) – Surgical Team
Location: Asheville Humane Society
Position: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Pay Range: $23.70-$28.00
About the Role:
As an RVT on our Surgical Team, you’ll provide high-quality nursing care to surgical patients and support veterinarians in high-volume spay/neuter operations. You’ll manage anesthesia, surgical prep, recovery, and patient assessments while maintaining the highest standards of sterility, safety, and professionalism. Much of the work is performed on a mobile medical unit, requiring adaptability, spatial awareness, and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare animals for surgery: induction, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, and recovery for up to 20 animals per day.
- Administer and document medications, vaccines, microchips, IV fluids, and other treatments.
- Maintain and troubleshoot anesthesia machines, surgical tools, and monitoring equipment; ensure aseptic technique.
- Assist veterinarians during procedures, exams, and treatments; support smooth patient flow.
- Participate in patient stabilization, emergency care, and RECOVER CPR protocols as needed.
- Support community access-to-care initiatives, including pop-up vaccine and wellness clinics.
- Mentor and train veterinary assistants, new hires, and volunteers.
- Maintain accurate medical records in digital databases and communicate effectively with coworkers, clients, and partners.
- Clean and disinfect animal areas, instruments, and equipment per protocols.
Qualifications:
- Licensed Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in North Carolina.
- Experience in veterinary or high-volume spay/neuter settings preferred.
- Proficiency in anesthetic monitoring, venipuncture, drug calculations, and surgical assistance.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Compassionate, professional, and nonjudgmental approach to clients, community, and colleagues.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Word, EMRs).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Fast-paced, high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgical environment.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs, stand, bend, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
- High focus, composure, and agility required to work safely with animals and equipment.
- Drug-, alcohol-, and smoke-free work environment.
