Tip of the Week: Hurricane Preparedness—Safe Places for Pets
It’s Hurricane Season. How can you provide assistance for those pet owners who most need your help?
Connect with local social service agencies to identify the pet owners who may most need your help in the event of an emergency or disaster—the elderly and disabled. As medical shelters do not permit pets, and pet-friendly shelters may require owners to be self-sufficient with hands-on care, your agency may be the central place these pet owners turn to in times of crisis. If your shelter is hurricane-safe and has capacity, offer to shelter these pets or build your foster network to include assistance to provide temporary foster homes.

What a photo! This is what a hurricane readiness plan can mean for the members of the community who most need your help: As this pet owner was unable to take care of her dog due to her own medical needs, a temporary foster home was provided during Hurricane Katrina recovery.

It is so important that pets be considered for any emergency plan. Leaving them in a house or outside to fend for themselves really should be considered criminal. Be sure to take pets in the car when you practice your evacuation plans to ensure they will be comfortable as well as learn how they travel and space they need. You can take a sawyer water filter from http://www.hurricanecamping.com to reduce the quantity of water storage jugs you carry which makes more space for pets and thier needs and still be assured you have the means to supply your daily water needs.
