  1. A link to their adoptable animals? or their donations page? or to an upcoming fundraiser? Such a neat way to engage the tech-savvy people visiting!

  2. Love QR codes! We put them on our available animals and they link back to the pets Petango page so someone has the information to take with them easily!

  3. It is a QR code (matrix). I don’t know enough about QR codes as I am not a technology oriented person…but I am trying to learn. They are cropping up everywhere these days and so it is good to see it being used. I really like the idea of being able to link to information about the animal or event or whatever right through your phone.

  4. SUCH a wonderful idea!!!!

  5. Tricia DeHart Says:

I have been using QR codes on my cage cards for almost a year now. It links back to the animals web profile! I also use them on posters we put at a mall kiosk. Don’t know if they help or not, but the certainly can’t hurt.

  6. A quick, er, scan of your responses reveals….YES! You’re all correctamundo! I checked in with Lori Kekel, Rescue & Event Coordinator at Cherokee County Animal Shelter (CCAS), who took this photo for us to illustrate the many ways she’s utilizing QR codes at the Canton, GA, agency.

“When I discovered an app to make my own QR codes, I hit on the idea to take people on an informational tour through the shelter with them,” says Lori. “I have put them just about everywhere–on doors, walls and windows as magnets and stickers!”

Here are just a few of the places you might find QR codes at CCAS, per Lori:

    - “We have Scan Me codes for the products that we use in the shelter. We are a Science Diet shelter, so we have a code that says, ‘What we feed our pets.’ We also have ones that say, ‘What we use to clean’ and ‘How we make it smell so good’ for our cleaning products.’”

    - “We have Scan Me codes for the programs we have at our shelter, like the Homeless Pet Clubs. Schools and businesses in our area have clubs to help promote adoptions for us. Each school/business makes a sign to post on their sponsored pet. I include that school/business website link in a QR code on the sign.”

    - “We also have codes for our Volunteer program, including a link to the page online for a registration form, and a Scan and Watch code linking to a YouTube video that shows what our volunteers do.”

    - “We have them placed throughout our hallways (we have big tackboards on either side of our main hallway with Happy Tails photos and PSA flyers, etc.) with codes to our website and Petfinder page.”

And this summer, Lori’s planning to use QR codes in a scavenger hunt for families visiting the shelter over summer break. “We are raising funds to purchase (and soliciting donations of) a few used iPod Touches or old iPhones (that can be used with WiFi in the shelter as iPods) for those that may not have a smart phone to borrow for the hunt,” she says. Super-neat idea, Lori—please let us know how it goes!
