What makes a mighty contender? Check out the agencies representing the Southeast Division in the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Wellington, FL

BDRR’s Facebook photos really engage—and include fun captions like this one: “Henry getting some TLC from foster Maddie after his surgery. :)

How they’d use $100,000: “We would build an effective quarantine facility!!!”

Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

What better way to illustrate their “Double Your Fun!” two-for-one cat adoption special than this kissing-cats photo.

Why they’re a contender: “We have community support and dedicated staff who think outside the box to ensure we exceed our goals!”

Central Brevard Humane Society, Cocoa, FLHow they’d use $100,000: “We would use the funds to purchase a mobile adoption vehicle that would take animals out in the community and hold off-site adopt-a-thons—more comfortable for cats and dogs to find new forever homes.”

Flagler Humane Society, Palm Coast, FL

Check out the smart wish list on FHS’ website—they ask for specific items, so their supporters know exactly how to help.

What makes them a contender: “We are under new management and are totally committed to ensuring that no animal is ever euthanized because of lack of space, time or resources through expanding adoptions, increasing foster homes and greater utilization of transferring to rescues.”

Oconee County Humane Society Inc., Seneca, SC

Says OHS re: snagging a spot in the Challenge, “The support we received from those who believed in our small shelter was AMAZING!”

What makes them a contender: “We are recognized in our community as a ‘best’ model of collaboration and cooperation between humane society and animal control.”

Portsmouth Humane Society, Portsmouth, VA

Smart Facebooking strategy that keeps 'em coming back: PHS posts daily reports on the number and names of all animals adopted for that day, along with a photo.

What they want you to know about them: “Each and every animal deserves a chance to have a loving, forever family, to be treated with respect, and to feel safe and secure. At Portsmouth Humane Society, we work to ensure that every animal passing through our shelter is afforded this opportunity.”

Seminole County Animal Services, Sanford, FL

Kids showing kittens some love at a recent SCAS adoption event.

How they’d spend the $100K: “We would build a veterinary surgical suite and hire a staff veterinarian.”

The Humane Society of Charlotte, Charlotte, NC

More fancy Facebooking: And the Humane Society of Charlotte posts their adoptions numbers weekly via slammin' signage like this.

How they describe themselves: “Small but mighty.”

Young Williams Animal Center, Knoxville, TN

Young Williams Animal Center rocked the Qualifying Heat by reminding folks to vote every day with fun photos like this one.

What makes them a tough competitor: “Even in today’s down economy, our resourceful life-saving programs and innovative rescue/adoption services have helped make us the state-of-the-art, “must-see” shelter of the South.”

Next week we’ll highlight the contestants in the North Central Division.
