Shelter’s Edge

Up for the Challenge, Part 2: Meet the 2012 Contestants

Last week we got up-close and personal with the contestants comprising the West Division in the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. This week, meet the agencies getting ready to rock the South Central Division. From August 1 through October 31, they’ll be pulling out all the stops to save more dogs and cats than they did during the same time last year.

Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, Phoenix, AZ

AAWL keeps ‘em coming back – Twizzler is the fourth pet this family has adopted. (Their two cats skipped the shelter visit and stayed home.)

“The Arizona Animal Welfare League is totally committed to the animals in our care and we are there for them for as long as they need us.”

BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions, Houston, TX

Precious is adopted from BARC at Houston PetTalks's recent Doggy Party on the Plaza event.

We would use the $100K to bolster our adoption program and invest in the development of a robust lost pet program.”

Beaumont Animal Services, Beaumont, TX

“Beaumont Animal Services Loves Their Fans!” BAS posted on Facebook along with this staff photo.

“What makes them a tough contender: “Beaumont Animal Services has the heart to save lives, and the will to win!”

City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, San Antonio, TX

Looks like San Antonio ACS is ready to get a move on…

How they’d use $100K: “We’d grow an existing foster program by providing needed funds for preventative and emergency medical care.”

Denton Animal Shelter Foundation, Denton, TX

We love how DASF recently promoted their barn cats on Facebook, responded to questions they received in the comment thread, and updated their fans when Dwayne was adopted.

DASF in 3 words: “Visionary. Passionate. Steadfast.”

HALO Animal Rescue, Phoenix, AZ

Can't-lose campaign tactic: During the $100K Challenge Qualifying Heat, HALO posted a daily LOLcat-style Facebook status encouraging supporters to vote every day.

“With our dedicated, compassionate staff and volunteers, HALO will fight our hearts out and make a push to win this baby!”

Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Tucson, AZ

Take a tip from HSSA and let your Facebook fans know what's on your Wish List: “As Dahlia will tell you,” they recently posted, “there’s nothing quite like waking up in a pile of fluffy blankets. But we need more!”

What makes them a tough contender: “We already have a solid presence in our community and a dedicated group of volunteers who will work hard to help us reach all our goals.”

Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, Santa Fe, NM

One of the new cat condos installed at SFASHS earlier this year.

How they describe themselves in three words: “Progressive, Informative and Welcoming.”

Tulsa Animal Welfare, Tulsa, OK

TAW's Officer Christy with Freeway, safe in the shelter after rescuing the kitty from the center median wall of a busy highway.

What makes them a tough contender: “TAW is a municipal agency that is ready to adopt the best ideas both from other government entities and from non-profit animal welfare organizations.”

Come back next week to meet the contestants representing the Southeast Division.
