Tricia, allow us to reuse your answer—er, question—in this update! You were close—this structure was indeed part of the Humane Society for Greater Savannah’s Homeward Bound theme that scored them the Community Engagement prize in last year’s $100K Challenge. The Savannah, GA, agency held a unique Re-Fest event last October, a contest that challenged their community to build cat and dog structures using recycled materials.

HSGS partnered with two sustainable green building companies that salvage used materials and use them to build other projects. The structure featured in this post? Courtesy of the CSX Train Company—they built a cat structure that looked like a caboose! One of the many structures auctioned off at the Re-Fest event.

HSGS Director of Operations Guinn Friedman raved about the success of this event’s community-engagement power: “We reached a different demographic that was separate from animal lovers—people interested in building a green Savannah. The young bands and local artists spread the word about the Challenge for us as they marketed themselves for the event. The event was retweeted and posted on Facebook for weeks.”
