Shelter’s Edge

Wordless Wednesday

Not that one ever needs a reason to look this debonair, but… why is this cat wearing a leopard-print bow tie?

P.S. Looking for the answer to last week’s Wordless Wednesday? You’re getting warmer! It’s right here.

UPDATE, February 28: Teddy O’Brien just might be getting ready for a black-tie event, but there is another excellent life-saving reason why he’s looking so swellegant. Teddy’s good friend, Brenda Griffin, DVM, MS, DACVIM, explains it all in the comment box.

  1. We figured this hunka hunka feline handsomeness might take your breath away, but it looks like he left you wordless last Wednesday, too! That’s OK, we understand—and it isn’t technically a bow tie being modeled by the great Teddy O’Brien here, but a collar. Why? Well, his good friend, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine’s Brenda Griffin, DVM, MS, DACVIM, wanted us to stress that A) cats should wear collars, and B) the importance of setting a good example in the shelter.

We know that many cat owners are hesitant to put collars on their pets. Some may see the risk of injury from a collar as much higher than the risk of their cat getting lost*, while others don’t think their indoors-only cat would ever get out in the first place. But indoor cats do get out—and a collar and tag can decrease risk by helping to ensure that a cat can be quickly identified and reunited with his or her owners. Some shelters are even putting collars and tags—engraved with their owner’s info—on all pets on the same day they go home with their new families.
