  1. I’m guessing he or she just had surgery and we don’t puppy to scratch the new wound? Or maybe she’s the Lady Gaga of dogs and just want to set a new trend? I hope to see the Kermit the Frog dress next!

  2. Certainly surgery factors in here…or injury of some sort…the socks are to stop nibbling, or licking…or scratching at a sore spot…this is why kids socks come in so darn handy…and cute colours too.

  3. Warmth for the paws during surgery. Heat loss is high through paws and the head. Keeping socks on for any amount of time during surgery helps overcome this loss.

  4. And the Golden Bootie goes to…Jennifer! (Although Sarah may have something there, too—this pup could totally rock a bubble dress, doncha think?)

We found this photo on Humane Ohio’s Facebook page, where we learned that the Toledo-based organization has been putting booties on the patients at their low-cost spay/neuter clinic ever since they learned about this smart tip at this year’s SNIP Summit. “Animals can rapidly lose heat from their extremities (just like humans!), so we keep their paws warm while they are under anesthesia and recovering,” writes Humane Ohio. “Our lead veterinary technician, Ruthie Uhl, purchased baby booties to keep paws warm while the pups and kitties are under anesthesia and recovering. They look so cute and the booties serve an important purpose!”

Fashionable AND functional…what’s not to love? How about free? “People have been donating and making the socks for us,” says Humane Ohio founder Aimee St. Arnaud. “And it also shows that high-volume, low-cost clinics do provide quality!”
